Request to Appear at the CRTC VRS Hearing

Update October 9, 2013:

Earlier today the CRTC responded to AVLIC's request to appear at the VRS hearing by saying YES, we can present! This is wonderful news which is being shared with our members, Deaf community leaders and VRS advocacy groups by direct email as well as the public via AVLIC's Facebook and Twitter accounts. Here are some additional details not listed in the original announcement below:

  • AVLIC will be presenting at the end of the day on Tuesday, October 22, 2013. An exact time is not given as it will depend on the progress of the hearing. There is also a chance, depending on the progress, that our presentation might be deferred to the morning of Wednesday, October 23, 2013.
  • AVLIC will be represented by:

AVLIC's Request to Appear at the CRTC VRS Hearing

In March 2013, the Canadian Radio-Television and Telecommunications Commission (CRTC) initiated a proceeding to address issues related to the feasibility of establishing a video relay service (VRS) in Canada. The Commission invited comments from the public, which had to be filed by May 27, 2013.  To view AVLIC’s submission, visit: http://www.avlic.ca/AVLICs_Support_of_VRS_in_Canada-Letter_to_CRTC.

The proceeding will include a public hearing, which will begin on October 21, 2013 in Gatineau, Québec. AVLIC did not originally request to appear before the CRTC Commission because of a misunderstanding about the length of time the hearing would be (see details in the letter attached below).  However, we now know the hearing will be 1 week and this is the formal, procedural request to the Secretary General to appear before the Commission.

We await a decision on our petition and once one is reached, an update will be posted on the AVLIC website and distributed to members. [see October 9, 2013, update at the top of this page]
