Dear AVLIC members and valued stakeholders,

Your Board was in Edmonton, Alberta on the October 4-5, 2014 weekend attending to AVLIC business. Edmonton was chillier in temperature than expected, but the welcome we received from our hosts and the Deaf community was very warm.

Busy times are ahead for AVLIC; the AVLIC membership has mandated the Board to oversee numerous goals and projects during the 2014-2016 term. However, it is IMPOSSIBLE for these goals and projects to be complete without committee members, and this means YOU!

AVLIC Board Meeting, Oct 4-5, 2014 in Edmonton, AB

The first in-person meeting of the 2014-2016 AVLIC Board of Directors will be October 4 - 5, 2014 in Edmonton, Alberta. Thank you to the Association of Sign Language Interpreters of Alberta (ASLIA) and the Alberta School for the Deaf (ASD) for hosting the the meeting. All AVLIC members and community members are welcome to attend the two-day meeting.

Canadian Coalition on Community Interpreting (CCCI) Launches New Website

The Canadian Coalition on Community Interpreting (CCCI) is a pan-Canadian alliance made up of over 50 key industry stakeholders. CCCI is leading a national approach to professionalizing the community interpreting field [including both spoken language interpreting and sign language interpreting].

International Week of the Deaf - Sept. 21-27, 2014

Events Hosted in Toronto

The Toronto Association of the Deaf (TAD) is coordinating 14 events in conjunction with "International Week of the Deaf," hosted under the auspices of the World Federation of the Deaf and 133 national associations of the Deaf around the world.

 

AVLIC is accepting nominations for the CES task force!
 
The AVLIC Board would like to request your assistance with finding the appropriate people to form the CES task force. Motion WP14G-27 (below), put forth and supported by AVLIC members at the AVLIC 2014 AGM requests that a task force include the following expertise:
 
- Knowledge of project management
- Assessment and learning outcomes knowledge
- Knowledge of the Canadian Evaluation System
 
The AVLIC Board is asking you, the members and our colleagues if you, yourself or if you know of someone who possesses one or more of the above listed skill sets. Please forward the name of the person to evaluations@avlic.ca by September 18, 2014. 

Change of Date for Comments to the CRTC re: VRS in Canada

 

On Thursday you received two emails from AVLIC in regards to the CRTC NOC-188-1, Notice of Consultation and Call for Comments. Yesterday, August 22, CRTC released NOC-188-2 and announced that the deadline to submit comments has been extended to September 29, 2014.

 

We strongly encourage all members to submit comments to the CRTC.
