General Information

The AVLIC membership year is from April 1st to March 31st annually.  New memberships can be processed at any time of the year, but there are no pro-rated fees (full year's fees are due regardless of the join date) and memberships must be renewed by the next March 31st. (For example: if an application is processed on September 1, 2017, the full year's fees are owing and the membership would need to be renewed by March 31, 2018 for the 2018-2019 membership year.)

Student membership is reserved for those enrolled in an AVLIC-recognized interpreter education program (IEP) and who are training to become professional sign language interpreters. IEP not on the recognized IEP list? click here.

Cost to Become a Student Member

For students living in a province which has an Affiliate Chapter, dual membership is required. As such AVLIC and at least 1 Affiliate Chapter must be chosen. Membership with additional Affiliate Chapters is possible, however, the Student membership dues for each Affiliate Chapter apply.

For students living in a province which does not have an Affiliate Chapter, joining AVLIC only (no Affiliate Chapter) may be an option. To learn more about the In Lieu of Affiliate Chapter Membership Policy, click here.

Payment Options

AVLIC accepts payment for membership fees in the following ways:

For new or renewing members, the payment plan option is designed to  spread out payments to reduce any financial hardship and encourage lapsed / expired members to rejoin. For existing members, AVLIC encourages the use of the payment plan instead of allowing your membership to expire.

Lapsed or Expired Membership

Student memberships not renewed by March 31st annually are subject to the late renewal fee (Motion OT10G-28). The late renewal fee is 25% of the AVLIC portion of membership. The late fee is applied to lapsed (late, but less than 2 years) or expired (late, and over 2 years) memberships. If a membership does lapse or expire, the member should contact the AVLIC office to have the former account profile reactivated.

Upgrading to Active Membership

Student membership is intended for students currently enrolled in an interpreter education program (IEP). Upon graduation from an IEP, members can upgrade to Active membership. However, if a recent graduate will not be working professionally (earning income from interpreting work) then the member can wait until they expect to begin working professionally or 90 days after completing the Written Test of Knowledge (WTK) - whichever comes first.

To learn more about the process to upgrade to Active membership, click here or contact the AVLIC office.

IEPs Not Currently AVLIC-Recognized

For students enrolled in an IEP which does not appear on the AVLIC-recognized IEP list, membership with AVLIC may still be possible. AVLIC's International IEP Review taskforce is mandated to review interpreter education programs which are not currently on the AVLIC recognized IEP list (this includes IEPs within the USA). They then make recommendations to the AVLIC Board of Directors to add IEPs with equitable program standards and outcomes to the current list. Contact the AVLIC office to request a review by the International IEP Review taskforce.
