Follow-up to Board Meeting on March 28, 2015

Dear valued AVLIC members and stakeholders,

Your Board of Directors met via online web-conference on March 28, 2015 for an extended meeting to discuss the CES and other items on the agenda. We are pleased to inform you of the following highlights.

Canadian Evaluation System (CES)

The majority of the meeting was focused on the CES Taskforce’s recommendations. The CES Taskforce met March 7 & 8, 2015 and had lengthy discussions on the future of the CES, and what certification means in Canada. Denise Sedran, member of the taskforce, joined the Board meeting to give an overview of what the taskforce has done to date and to answer questions from your Board. The taskforce will be developing a survey for members which will be sent out soon. The goal is to have the findings from the survey and recommended next steps presented to members at the 2015 AGM. Keep an eye on your e-mail inbox for more details.

Directors on the Board

We were happy to welcome Brenda Jenkins as your enthusiastic new director to the Board of Directors. This was Brenda’s first time joining an AVLIC Board meeting this term. She will be meeting with the Affiliate Chapter presidents shortly to prepare for the presidents’ meeting at the June 2015 AGM.

Executive Director

Last week AVLIC began advertising for the new executive director position. Applications have been received and the shortlisting and interview process will be next. Your Board is planning on hiring the executive director in time for the successful applicant to attend the June 2015 AGM in Vancouver.

Dispute Resolution Process (DRP)

Unfortunately, with a full agenda, your Board ran out of time at this meeting to devote the energies needed to discuss the recommendations from the DRP review. A special Board meeting will be held on April 15, 2015 to focus on these recommendations, how they affect our bylaws, what bylaws need to be revised and what motions are needed for the June 2015 AGM. The bylaws will need to be reviewed and edited by a lawyer to ensure they are legally sound and can support the Association should a legal situation arise. Members can expect to see bylaw amendment motions in the 2015 AGM package. The Board will also update members after this special Board meeting.

What’s next for your Board?

  1. Interview and hire an executive director for AVLIC by the June 2015 AGM.
  2. Hold a special meeting to discuss the DRP review.
  3. Prepare for the AVLIC AGM in June 2015.
  4. Finalize the new AVLIC Operating Policies and Procedures Manual.
