Dr. Flavia Fleischer

 Dr. Flavia Fleischer

Dr. Flavia S. Fleischer is the chair of the Deaf Studies Department at California State University, Northridge. Prior to CSUN, Flavia taught at Gallaudet University from 2003-2006 and at Utah Valley University from 2007-2011.

Flavia was born to the field of Deaf Studies as her father was one of the pioneering academicians in the field. Deaf Studies has been a central theme in Flavia's life, where Deaf education, Deaf Studies issues, and Deaf activism were constant areas of discussion. In her childhood, most of her focus was on understanding herself as a Deaf person and the role of Deaf people in our world.

Flavia holds a Doctor of Philosophy degree in linguistics from Gallaudet University and her dissertation centered on the application of Critical Discourse Analysis (CDA) in analyzing American society's constructed image of Deaf people as drawn from discursive constructions of Deaf people in major U.S. newspaper articles on cochlear implantation.

In addition to Flavia's interests in linguistics, she is an activist and invested in fighting against all forms of oppression. She has given numerous workshops and presentations relating to American Sign Language (ASL), ASL Linguistics, Deaf Education, and Deaf Cultural Studies.

When Flavia has some free time, she enjoys spending time with her husband, Dr. Will Garrow, their 21-year-old daughter, Ryssa, and their three dogs. When she fully recovers from her recent ACL knee surgery, she plans to start training for a marathon and to return to playing competitive racquetball.
