Update From the AVLIC Board of Directors

Dear Members,
We are pleased to provide a consolidated update from our two recent Board meetings.
The AVLIC Board of Directors met on June 2-4, 2017 in Edmonton, Alberta and then on September 30 and October 1, 2017 in Halifax, NS. We were greeted on in Edmonton with wonderfully generous welcome packages filled with locally made goodies and some ASLIA swag. A huge thank you to everyone who contributed! In Halifax we attended the community premiere of The Halifax Explosion: The Deaf Experience, which was such a delight to see the success of an award winning Deaf produced and directed documentary.
We were also joined at our meetings by some special tiny guests. Jocelyn’s sweet little girl Cleora and Ashley's smiley son Archer were a joy to have around. 
The AVLIC Board and staff would like to again say congratulations to AVLIC’s newest COI Holders; Jennifer Hawkins, Danny Elliott, and Brenda Jenkins. We are thrilled for your success and fortunate to have membership so dedicated to our profession

Strategic Plan, Finances, Transition

AVLIC’s rolling strategic plan and how our finances can be best utilized to fund the many projects and programs is always a topic of discussion. Last winter the Board sent out several emails about the strategic plan, and it has been a beneficial resource for the Board and AVLIC staff. We are committed to making sure it is useful and accessible to all membership.
Our discussions led to how we can revise the format of the strategic plan to be more user friendly, as well as separate out the tasks that are operational vs. visionary for AVLIC. We spent time reviewing our budget and financial statements along side the items listed in the plan. The AVLIC office will focus on searching for external funding (grants) and partnerships to help implement items such as the PCRP; as well as fundraising initiatives for general AVLIC operations.
In Edmonton Maureen Haan, AVLIC parliamentary advisor joined us to review our progress in the transition to a governance board. While we have made great progress since the hiring of the Executive Director, and now a new Administrative Assistant, the still limited AVLIC staffing has meant some tasks have been given back to the Board, such as the secretarial duties. The items given back to the Board will allow the office to focus their energy on finding funding, administrative structure, and implementing policies that will strengthen our Association.

AVLIC’s New Name

At the recent AGM in Edmonton, the membership voted with overwhelming support to change our name to CASLI (Canadian Association of Sign Language Interpreters). The Name Change Implementation Task Force is already at work to help this process go as quickly and smoothly as possible. Thank you to everyone who has taken this on! Please look for more information from the task force coming soon.

CES TOI Rating Review Team 

The team met in Vancouver, BC in August for 4 days and have provided the Board with a preliminary report on their findings. The team will be meeting again in January to continue their work. The Board and Evaluations Committee are in discussions currently with the team about the report and developing next steps. Please refer to an email sent in July regarding the review team.

Test of Interpretation 

Historically the TOI has been offered the first Saturday in March annually. Spring is the busiest time for AVLIC, with the office dealing with membership renewals and the financial year end, as well as preparing for the AGM. Because of this, is has been decided to move the testing date. Starting in 2018 TOI will start being offered every fall. We hope this, along with some other potential changes, will streamline the process of rating the TOI.

Board of Directors Nominations 

As the 2018 AGM is less than a year away, the Board is looking at the Board nominations for the 2018-2020 term. Where has the time gone! While some Board members are happy to put their names forward for another term, some directors have decided not to run again. Please watch your emails regarding nominations for the 2018-2020 Board being elected at the AGM in Niagara Falls.
