AVLIC 2014 Pre-Conference Workshops

The Conference is fast approaching and with it the Pre-Conference workshops. We have two exciting workshops planned:

Professional Development Workshop: Immigration Law and Working with Deaf Interpreters

The message below is from TSLIS:

Dear respected colleagues,

Toronto Sign Language Interpreter Service (TSLIS) is an interpreter run organization dedicated to providing valuable professional development for the benefit of the professional practice of Sign Language Interpreting. Our emphasis on professionalism will further extend to improve services for the Deaf community.

OASLI Public Education Package

AVLIC thanks our Affiliate Chapter Ontario Association of Sign Language Interpreters (OASLI) for their recent efforts to create a series of resources that answer common questions people ask about the profession.  OASLI's resources can be found on their website at OASLI Position Papers & Resources.

Message for All Student Members & Recent IEP Graduates

Hello AVLIC Student Members and Recent Graduates!

My name is Ryan Kraft and I'm an ASL/English interpreter based in Toronto. Two years ago, I planned a meet and greet for students on the first day of the AVLIC 2012 conference in Calgary. It was great! We had a few dozen students show up and we all got to meet and talk to each other. We had AVLIC Board members come, and the conference co-chairs too, and everyone had a fun time!

AVLIC Annual General Meeting Information

AVLIC is required to hold an AGM each year.  During this time, the Board of Directors is responsible to report to the membership on the activities of the past year.

AVLIC Office Closed - May 2 - 18, 2014

The AVLIC office will be closed on Friday, May 2, 2014 and will reopen on Monday, May 19, 2014.

As you may know, the AVLIC office is staffed by one person. There is no replacement hired to cover during the annual vacation for the staff person and as such e-mails, telephone calls and text messages sent to the AVLIC office will not be responded to until the office reopens on May 19, 2014. Please be patient as responses will take up to 10 days upon the reopening of the office.

Most Canadian Evaluation System Offerings on Hold During Review - Effective Immediately

As you are aware, the Canadian Evaluation System (CES) Review Request for Proposals No.10006 was originally issued in December 2012 (as RFP No. 10004) and then reissued on March 13, 2014 and again on April 15, 2014. There are logistical, procedural and operational changes that need to be made to continue running the system effectively and to enhance user-friendliness. To make those changes, the Board of Directors needs the input of members in the form of a review of the entire system.
